Something I do often is turn on a playlist of worship songs as background music. Whether it’s when I’m working or when I’m doing things around the house, I love having it on. Most of the time, it’s just there in the background; however, recently a song by United Pursuit came on and stopped me in my tracks. The song is called “Take a Moment” and the lyrics that stuck out to me were:
Take a moment to remember who God is and who I am.
To be honest, my first thoughts after hearing those lyrics were quite prideful. I have been pursuing a relationship with the Lord for years, of course I know who God is. However, after I thought about it a little more, I was immediately humbled. Looking back at my life these past few months, there were actually a lot of moments where I forgot who God is. When the going got tough, I forgot that He is never changing. In the moments of physical and emotional pain, I forgot that He is the Divine Physician. In moments where I doubted my worth, I forgot that He is my Father.
After I prayed with the idea of “who God is”, I then began to pray with the idea of “who I am.” There have been many times in my life where I forget exactly who I am in relation to who God is. I try to tell myself that I know best or that I can do certain things on my own. But as I prayed with these song lyrics, I was reminded of just how little I actually am. I was reminded that even the choice I make to pray each day requires grace from the Lord. I was reminded that the very breath I breathe is only because the Lord breathed life into me. I was reminded that without God I am nothing.
The Lord’s revelation to me through these lyrics has been such a gift, but I didn’t want it to just be a one-time thing. I didn’t just want to take a moment once, I wanted it to be something that I do each and every day. So here are 5 things that have helped me, “Take a moment to remember who God is and who I am,”:
- Visit the Blessed Sacrament
This has probably been the biggest gifts in helping me remember who God is. As I sit in front of the presence of Jesus, face to face, I cannot help but be filled with awe and wonder at who He is. I cannot help but be reminded of His goodness and His perfect love.
- Be Grateful
Be grateful for the little things. A lot of times, I forget all of the ways the Lord has worked in my life. I am quick to think about the things I need from the Lord during the present moment, but don’t spend as much time reflecting on the ways that He has worked in my life. Or even more so, the ways that He is currently working in my life.
- Expect Big Things from God
It is easy to put God in a box, to think that the miracles Jesus performed were only back then and not something that we can hope for now. But if I have learned anything while reflecting on who God is, it is that He is all powerful.
- Reflect on the Characteristics of God
The Lord has a lot of different titles, some of which resonate with us at different times. Take time to reflect on some of the characteristics of our God, especially the ones you are experiencing in your relationship with Him right now. Go to the Lord as the Divine Physician. Go to the Lord as the Prince of Peace. Go to the Lord as Abba. Take time to reflect on who He is and all He is.
- Admit Your Own Weakness
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong,’” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).
Pray with this verse each and every day to remind yourself of the Lord’s strength and your own littleness. Very quickly, you will be reminded of who you are in relation to who God is.
Above all today, take a moment to remember who God is and who you are.
